The announced merger of Compass Inc. and Anywhere Real Estate in late 2025 sent shockwaves through the real estate industry.
From agents to brokerages to buyers and sellers and even other power players like Realtor.com and Zillow, questions swirled on what exactly the impact of this merger could be. With the merger now complete, CENTURY 21 Legacy wanted to address many of the biggest questions out there, as well as many of the expected benefits to agents, buyers, and sellers. You can visit our website, c21legacy.com, for more information about all things real estate.
The merger brings together Compass Inc. and Anywhere Real Estate under one group, Compass International Holdings (CIH). Anywhere is the parent company of notable brands CENTURY 21®, Coldwell Banker®, Better Homes and Gardens®, ERA®, Sotheby’s and Corcoran Group. Together, the merger forms the single-largest international real estate brokerage in the world with approximately 340,000 agents.
The merger was announced in September 2025 and was completed as of January 2026. With overwhelming stakeholder approval, and a regulatory review, the merger was able to be completed well ahead of schedule. Compass CEO Robert Reffkin was appointed the new Chairman and CEO of CIH.
Robert Reffkin - Compass, Inc. CEO
“Each of our brands will continue to operate independently, supported by extraordinarily talented employees, and strengthened by a shared platform that delivers tools and integrated services that simply aren’t possible in a standalone model.” Robert Reffkin
The combination of the two companies allows each to tap into the other’s strengths, namely technology (Compass) and brand awareness (Anywhere). Additionally, as the largest real estate brokerage in the world, the combined resources allow for continued development of new technology and providing unparalleled service to agents and their clients.
Nothing!
Compass has no intentions to alter any branding of CENTURY 21®, Coldwell Banker®, or any of the other brands. According to Robert Reffkin, “Each of our brands will continue to operate independently, supported by extraordinarily talented employees, and strengthened by a shared platform that delivers tools and integrated services that simply aren’t possible in a standalone model.”
On the day-to-day, agents can expect to see very little change or impact to their current operations. For clients, this allows for the same knowledge and expertise to which they are accustomed to from our agents, but now with an increased ability to market and promote listings for sellers and tools to deliver the Joy of Home to buyers everywhere. This merger is less about consolidating into one real estate monolith, and more about combining resources to provide the best possible experience for agents and their clients, while elevating the real estate industry as a whole.
CENTURY 21 Legacy President and CEO Jamie Skeen
CENTURY 21 Legacy President and CEO Jamie Skeen on the merger: “I am very optimistic about this merger and feel that [CIH CEO] Robert Reffkin shares our same approach to doing business. As always, we remain agent-focused, to let agents continue focusing on serving their client’s needs.”
In addition to the increased power of combining the two entities, the biggest benefit should come in the form of new, better technology centered on the people that use it: real estate professionals. Compass excels in developing new tools to help agents maximize their time to reach their, and their client’s goals. While the exact date is not currently known, it has been confirmed that all of their technology offerings will be made available to all previous Anywhere franchises and their agents so it can be integrated into their current business.
This merger uniquely positions CENTURY 21 Legacy to continue to help their agents serve their community with a local, personal focus, while still having the support of a globally-recognized and industry-leading company behind them. This combination of resources will be unparalleled within the real estate industry to let agents focus on what they do best…helping their clients!
